The Importance of Regular Oil Changes

Why We Do Oil Changes?

Without regular oil changes, your vehicle will experience wear and damage since its internal components move against each other. Dirt, sludge, and moisture will accumulate in your engine over time, and can easily lead to internal engine damage if ignored. Worst case scenario, when the problem escalates, you might need to swap your engine.

Fortunately, for car owners, oil changes are quite inexpensive and relatively easy to perform. You are not required to have any specialized training changing your oil, however, it’s still advisable to have a professional mechanic perform this service for you. They are in a much better position to spot other issues and recommended repairs early.

Why Do You Need to Get Car Oil Changes?

There are several reasons why your oil needs to be changed. First, due to your engine’s nature of operating under high temperatures, the oil undergoes thermal breakdown. This makes the oil less suitable as a lubricant.

Your vehicle’s oil also gets contaminated over time. Oil helps cool, clean, seal, and lubricate the engine. When your oil is overused and gets dirty, it is unable to lubricate the engine properly. Your engine also burns up the engine oil over time; waiting too long will result in engine damage due to low oil levels.

Why is Engine Oil Important?

  • Helps lubricate the engine. Your engine has several internal components, including pistons, and valves that move at very high rates. When in motion, these components create a lot of heat, and if improperly lubricated, would wear down the engine.
  • Helps cool down the engine. Moving internal components in your engine that lack lubrication will create friction, which results in heat. Having regular clean and sufficient levels of oil is the best way to prevent friction in the engine.
  • Gets rid of sludge and engine wear particles. Having dirt particles in your engine is very dangerous. With time these particles will lead to corrosion, decreasing its lifespan. With time, oil breaks down to sludge. It is, therefore, essential to keep your oil clean through regular oil and filter changes.
  • Helps improve gas mileage. Inadequate lubrication will mean your engine will have to work harder to achieve the desired output consuming a lot of fuel in the process. According to the U.S Department of energy, routine car oil changes will improve your gas mileage by up to 2%. While it doesn’t seem a lot, it could add up to a full gallon of gas in a year.
  • Helps maintain your resale value. Regular car maintenance will make it last longer. Dirty oil decreases your gas mileage and power, leading to quick wear and tear. This leads to a shorter lifespan down the road. A car with a lot of mechanical issues doesn’t perform well in the car market.
  • How Often Should I Change My Oil?

It is recommended that you change your oil every 3,000 miles. If you are unsure of the interval, check your owner’s manual or visit a professional mechanic such as one from AAMCO Tallahassee. While there is a debate on how long you should change your oil, letting your car stay too long between oil changes will lead to costly repairs down the road.
