Ready to cruise but your car won’t start? It can be frustrating when you have someplace to be or just hear the open road calling but nothing happens when you go to start the engine. You may hear a clicking sound or your engine may turn over but not properly start. In any case, there are several possible causes, and a trained mechanic will be able to help diagnose which of these common causes may be behind your car problems.

Your Battery is Dead
One of the most common causes behind a car not starting is simply a dead battery. Fortunately, this could be a simple fix. In the short term, you can use jumper cables and a good samaritan’s car to jump start your battery. If this solves your problem, you’ll want to take a drive for at least a half hour to make sure your battery is fully charged. It’s still a good idea to have your battery and its connections checked by a mechanic to ensure there aren’t any other issues causing a dead battery. You also may find yourself in the market for a new battery sooner rather than later.
There’s Too Much Dirt or Corrosion on Your Battery Connections
Pop your hood and take a look at your battery. If you notice a lot of dirt or corrosion on the terminals, that could keep power from getting into or coming out of the battery. You can easily clean them off with a mixture of baking soda and water, plus an old toothbrush. More than likely there is also corrosion where the terminal connects to the battery and that will necessitate removing the terminal connections and cleaning properly. Ensure your car is not running when you clean the terminals. If your car still won’t start, you may need a new battery or have another related problem.
Timing Belt Care
Your timing belt is responsible for turning the camshaft, or camshafts, perfectly in sync with the engine’s pistons in order to open and close the intake and exhaust valves. These valves let in air and fuel and allow exhaust to escape from the cylinders to the exhaust system after being ignited inside the cylinders. When a timing belt or chain becomes broken or severely worn, it can throw this delicate timed balance off and do major damage to the engine including bent valves, broken pistons and the vehicle’s engine will not start or run. The manufacturer gives time and mileage maintenance recommendations for these belts that should be adhered to without fail in order to protect your engine and keep the vehicle safe on the road. AAMCO is the expert on minor and major system repairs and maintenance and can do this service for you.
Faulty or Broken Wires
While you’re in there, take a look at the connecting wires coming from your battery. If any of them look worn, frayed, or broken, that’s likely the reason your car won’t start. Broken or faulty wires won’t allow power to be properly transmitted to and from the battery. If you’re car savvy, you can attempt replacing them yourself. If not, you’ll have to get your car to a mechanic to have the electrical system serviced. Fortunately, your nearest AAMCO offers complimentary tow services.
Your Starter is Faulty
Basically, your starter motor sits between the battery and engine and is responsible for setting the engine in motion when you turn the ignition. If this is your problem, you may hear a click when you turn the ignition but no other response. A mechanic will be able to replace your starter and handle any other necessary car repairs to get your car’s electrical system back up and running.
There’s a Problem with Your Fuel System
This common cause involves a problem with parts of your car’s fuel system, including the fuel pump. Effectively, this means there isn’t enough fuel reaching your car’s engine to ignite and get the engine running. Your engine relies on the proper mixture of air and fuel. When one of those is missing or the ratio is off, it can cause big problems for your car’s engine. A mechanic will be able to diagnose the problem and get it repaired.
Bad Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils
Your ignition coils and spark plugs are responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture in your engine’s cylinders. If one or more of them wear out, your engine will have trouble starting and running properly and you probably have a check engine light on. You may also notice misfires when your engine is running if a bad ignition coil or worn spark plug is to blame. If you’re comfortable doing at home car care, ignition coils and spark plugs are affordable and simple to repair. If not, a qualified mechanic can easily and quickly take care of it for you.
Problems with Your Alternator
If your alternator is the problem or the alternator belt is compromised, you may find you also have a recurring dead battery. That’s because your alternator is responsible for charging the battery, along with powering your car’s lights, radio, and heating. It could be the alternator or the connecting wires, but a mechanic is best able to diagnose any necessary repair.
You’re Out of Fuel
Sometimes the problem is simply that your car is out of gas. If it’s been a while since you last filled up your gas tank or you remember your gas being low the last time you drove, this could be the reason your car isn’t starting. Try adding gas to the fuel tank. If that doesn’t work, you may have a different problem keeping your car’s engine from starting.
